Horizon Europe to fund two Bilkent Faculty

February 24, 2025 Written by ttoweb

As a result of the evaluations for the 2024 MCSA Postdoctoral Fellowships, Dr. Onur Tümtürk from the Department of Urban Design and Landscape Architecture at Bilkent University has received funding from ERA Fellowship programme and Dr. Selma Mayda from Bilkent UNAM has received funding from the European Postdoctoral Fellowship panel.

In his project, Dr. Tümtürk aims to investigate the influence of urban form on public open spaces (POS) accessibility in rapidly developing urban contexts, using Turkey’s capital city of Ankara as a case study, and to explore the alignment between objectively measured and perceived POS accessibility. By integrating data-driven urban form analysis with insights into residents’ perceived accessibility, the study will contribute to understanding the interplay between urban form, POS accessibility, and social equity. The research will generate insights for urban policymakers and contribute to developing POS-oriented urban retrofitting strategies applicable to developing cities in Europe and beyond.

Dr. Mayda’s project focuses on understanding the pigment degradation caused by environmental factors such as humidity, temperature, and pollutants in 19th and 20th-century paintings. The project aims to advance material science and conservation by creating a comprehensive database that offers data-driven guidelines to help extend the lifespan of valuable historical artworks. This interdisciplinary approach aims to make a significant contribution to the preservation of cultural heritage for future generations, benefiting both the scientific community and conservation professionals.

The Marie Skłodowska Curie Research Programmes and Fellowships aim to enhance human potential in research and technology, support the career development of researchers, promote international and inter-sectoral researcher mobility, and, as a result, make Europe and Turkey a hub for researchers.
