Near field nano-FTIR spectroscopy beats the Abbe’s diffraction limit and enables nanometer-scale vibrational spectroscopic analysis of sulfur poisoning on catalytic Pd nanoparticles (NP) over Al2O3 support. Rather than analyzing a convoluted vibrational spectrum due to >106 catalytic active nanoparticles as in the case of conventional vibrational spectroscopic techniques, investigation of spectroscopic/structural/adsorbate variations on a single NP (e.g., metal/support/metal-support interfacial sites) was achieved.
