On 2nd of May, Chemistry Talk Seminar Series will be proudly hosting Assoc. Prof. İrem Erel Göktepe. Dr. Göktepe will be giving a talk titled “Functionalization of Surfaces via Layer-by-Layer Technique”. All department members and students are cordially invited to attend.
Abstract : Layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly of polymers at surfaces is an easy and economical way to functionalize surfaces or produce free standing films. LbL technique also allows incorporating functional molecules into multilayers. Therefore, functional molecule-embedded LbL films are promising polymer platforms for controlled release applications from surfaces. By using stimuli responsive polymers as building blocks for multilayer assembly, it is possible to induce release of functional molecules from surfaces by changing environmental conditions, e.g. pH, temperature, ionic strength, light. Among these, pH and temperature are the most extensively studied stimuli due to the relative ease of control in pH and temperature. In this talk, I will present examples of different pH- and/or temperature-responsive polymer multilayer films, their stimuli-responsive release properties and potential biomedical applications.
About İrem Erel Göktepe : Dr. Irem Erel Goktepe obtained her BS and MS degrees from Istanbul Technical University. She earned her Ph.D. in Chemistry from Stevens Institute of Technology, NJ under supervision of Prof. Svetlana Sukhishvili in 2009. She worked as a post-doctoral fellow at Koç University between 2009–2011. She joined Middle East Technical University in 2011. She conducts research on self-assembly of polymers and preparation of functional polymer films.
