Dr. Foster Chamberlin

Foster Chamberlin received his Ph.D. in modern European history with a specialization in Spain from the University of California, San Diego in 2017. His research concerns how the cultures of military institutions in Europe influenced the course of the continent’s violent conflicts from 1914-1945 and contributed to the fall of interwar democratic regimes. His book project traces the development of the organizational culture of Spain’s gendarmerie, the Civil Guard, from its founding in the mid-nineteenth century through the tumultuous Second Republic period in the 1930s that preceded the Spanish Civil War. Chamberlin has published articles in War & SocietyEuropean History QuarterlyBulletin for Spanish and Portuguese Historical Studies and Revista de Historiografía. Prior to coming to Bilkent, he taught humanities at Boğaziçi University and San Diego Miramar College.
